About

There are two very different approaches to the modern day, America-centric concept of Halloween. There’s the cute, family friendly, arts ‘n crafts, bobbing for apples Halloween – what I call Better Homes & Gardens Halloween – and the gory, pitch black, acknowledging-its-Pagan-origins “goth” Halloween. The small area where those two pictures overlap is what I consider the purest essence of Halloween.

Halloween is playful, but mischievous. It’s fun, but macabre. It’s darkly comic. Like the best commercial haunted houses, it scares you, then makes you laugh. I Remember Halloween is a tribute to that essence. And of course, it’s so much more than one day. Around these parts, we celebrate Halloween for two entire months, but it’s in our hearts around the year.

Bonfires burning bright
Pumpkin faces in the night
I remember Halloween
Dead cats hanging from poles
Little dead are out in droves
I remember Halloween

Brown leaf vertigo
Where skeletal life is known
I remember Halloween
This day anything goes
Burning bodies hanging from poles
I remember Halloween

Candy apples and razor blades
Little dead are soon in graves
I remember Halloween
This day anything goes
Burning bodies hanging from poles
I remember Halloween
